About the Author

Stephen Marshak is a Professor Emeritus of Geology at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, where he taught for 35 years. During this time, he also served as Head of the Department of Geology and as Director of the School of Earth, Society, & Environment. Steve holds an A.B. from Cornell University, an M.S. from the University of Arizona, and a Ph.D. from Columbia University all in geology. His research interests in structural geology and tectonics have taken him in the field on several continents. Steve, a Fellow of the Geological Society of America, has won the highest teaching awards at both the college and campus levels at the University of Illinois, and has also received a Neil Miner Award from the National Association of Geoscience Teachers for “exceptional contributions to the stimulation of interest in the Earth Sciences.” In addition to research papers and Earth: Portrait of a Planet, Essentials of Geology, Earth Science, and Laboratory Manual for Introductory Geology, he has co-authored Earth Structure: An Introduction to Structural Geology and Tectonics, and Basic Methods of Structural Geology.

This book is well-organized and very clearly and interestingly written. I am a senior citizen taking a geology class, and this book presents the material in a manner that sustains my interest and explains the fundamental concepts and ideas very well. I would recommend it to anyone wishing to deepen their understanding of our planet.

Just wanted to document that this product came with some wear and tear of the covers and I expected that because of the age of the editon, just wanted to document for future purchases and to not gets charged for this. Overall in good condition to me, no missing or ripped pages.

Really good to understanding an introduction to geology for my Dynamic Earth class. The questions on the back of each chapter helps understand what are the important points of a particular chapter. Text wise, it is very descriptive to the point that I understand very complex material I have not encounter before in consideration of Earth dynamics. Detailed images are also key to explaining complex material, but there was one diagram (pg.99 Figure 4.13 (b) ) that was little bit off as pointed by my professor. However this does not deter my appreciation of the textbook helping understand and pass my Dynamic Earth class, would recommend it to any one taking any introduction to geology course.

This is an excellent basic level geology textbook! It is one of the few textbooks that I have actually enjoyed reading, and trust that I have read many textbooks over the course of my education that I am able to make that comparison.While most textbooks are relatively dry and painful to read, with Earth: Portrait of a Planet I have read chapters that were not required for class just because it was so enjoyable.After I completed my introductory level geology class that this textbook was required for I made the mistake of letting a friend borrow this book and I never saw it again. When I later was enrolled in a mineralogy class, I found myself wishing I could return to this book as a reference. So I bought this book used from Amazon for approximately $4.00, and I often found myself returning to this book in the follow-on classes for an easy to read refresher in several chapters. This book was well worth the money, even the second time around purchasing the book.

Excellent introductory geology book, one of the few texts that I kept and still have from my first geology class! Great diagrams and I still use it for reference (4 years later) on current class papers!

Despite being a paperback, this is actually one of the heaviest books I've had to carry throughout my college years. I don't mind much though, as the book is a very good one. The contents are great and many, and can very easily be understood with the accompanying pictures and illustrations. This book is also a great reference for any papers concerning geologic processes or formations.

Good informational book with lots of pictures, graphs and questions and quiz questions. I used this class for my Geology Class at Saddleback College in Mission Viejo and that was the book required at that time. If you are somebody that enjoys Geology then this might be a good reading for you and should purchase it.
